PARENTING TIPS

Why might I need/want parenting tips?

Let’s face it! We don’t know of any parent, ourselves included, that has not thought about how to improve as a parent OR how to manage their child’s behavior, tantrums, talking back, etc.

Parenting is hard! In fact, the PEW Research Center has provided evidence that at least 1 in every 3 parents resorts to social media to give and seek parenting tips/strategies.

With different attitudes and perspectives on child-rearing and parenting being available, it can be difficult to identify what evidence-based parenting strategies actually work.

What are parent training programs?

In parent training programs, parents learn evidence-based skills and strategies to respond effectively to kids’ behavior.

Most programs focus on using praise and rewards to encourage good behavior and consistent consequences for unacceptable behavior.

Some programs include:

  • Parent-Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT)
  • Parent Management Training (PMT)
  • Defiant Teens
  • Positive Parenting Program (Triple P)
  • The Incredible Years
  • Behavioral and Emotional Skills Training (BEST)

What is Behavioral Parent Training (BPT)?

Behavioral Parent Training (BPT) is a program that helps parents learn ways to help their child behave better. BPT is done with a mental health professional who meets parents to teach them these evidence-based parenting strategies. The therapist, in these instances, acts as a coach for parents who apply these strategies in session and at home.

BPT programs cover:

  • Creating house rules, organization, and routine
  • Using clear instructions
  • Learning to praise good behavior and ignoring mild, incorrect behavior
  • Planning ahead and working with children in public places
  • Using charts and point systems with rewards and consequences

Does Behavioral Parent Training (BPT) work?

Yes! Behavior therapy is an effective treatment for attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) that can improve a child’s behavior, self-control, and self-esteem.

BPT programs have also resulted in significant changes in pre-training to post-training child behavior changes, per parent report.
