CAYA (Children, Adolescents, Young Adult, & Adult) Care
Across our training and clinical experiences as psychologists, all of us dealt with problems regarding having patients placed on 6+ month waitlists or referring patients out. This was the case with many other psychologists across the United States pre-pandemic.
The COVID years, however, brought about increased challenges for patients as well as difficulties accessing high quality mental health care. According to the World Health Organization, the COVID-19 pandemic brought about a 25% increase in the prevalence of anxiety and depression worldwide.
In clinic, we clearly saw the many reasons that led to increase in mental health concerns, including financial difficulties, family conflict, employment changes, loneliness/isolation, fear of infection, loss of loved ones, among many others.
Friends and family members reached out to us to ask if we knew any mental health professionals that could see them or their children to help with different concerns. However, there were no high-quality providers that were easily accessible. The process to see a qualified professional included calling the clinic during work hours, waiting to hear back from an intake coordinator, being placed on a waitlist, being called back many months later, scheduling on the phone with someone, and then coming in for the first visit. On the other hand, there were new ways emerging to seek mental health treatment quickly but these short-cuts often were at the risk of receiving lower quality services with treatments lacking an evidence-base.
Many questions started coming up for us as psychologists: Is it up to patients and their families to do the bulk of the work searching for a high-quality provider? Do people really need to wait 6+ months to see a provider for mental health concerns? Is it somehow given that accessing high quality care would be associated with a long and non-user friendly process? And how helpful is it for patients to get care quickly if it’s not the best care possible for them?
We chose to launch CAYA Care in response to these questions in order to provide high quality care at your fingertips. You don’t have to wait until business hours to call and schedule an appointment with a provider at CAYA. You don’t have to sit on long waitlists to see a psychologist at CAYA Care, and you don’t have to be the one doing research on which provider is best matched for your presenting concerns as well as is licensed where you live. Let US do the work!
